Hokianga Region

You are here: Home  > North Island  > Northland  > Hokianga Region

This region on the Northland’s west coast is seldom visited, but makes a good alternative route south if you’ve already gone up the east coast through the Bay of Islands. It’s one of the less developed areas of the North Island and boasts some great scenery including Hokianga Harbour and the sand hills near Opononi.

Hokianga is also home to some of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand, including Horeke and the ferry town of Rawene. The area is a very relaxing alternative to the more touristy action of the Bay of Islands.
