Collingwood & Farewell Spit

At the far north corner of the South Island is Farewell Spit, which is the world’s longest sandbar at 35km.

It extends out into the Tasman Sea and provides a coastal barrier where wetland birds come to nest. It has some nice walking tracks and is popular with cyclists despite the sometimes dangerous winding roads. A few kilometres south of the Spit is Collingwood, a tiny historic gold rush town with great views.
