Manapouri is a small settlement on the edge of the Lake Manapouri, about 20 minutes from Te Anau. The lake offers some exquisite scenery, with the surrounding Cathedral and Hunter mountain ranges lit up by the sun and giving the area a dramatic ambience. The town itself is barely more than a village and is spread out along the highway with shops and homes sitting humbly beneath the hills. This is mostly a base for travellers going to Doubtful Sound, as well as hikers heading to the Kepler and Dusky Tracks. The lake offers excellent kayaking, and there are horse trekking excursions in the environs.
