Opotiki is the gateway to the East Cape, and has more in common with that region’s remote, country feel than with the thriving Bay of Plenty to the west. Most travellers stop off here on the way to or from the Cape; if you’re heading to the Cape, this is definitely a place to stock up on cash, fuel and supplies.
There’s not a great deal to detain you in Opotiki for long, but it does offer some attractions. The region’s strong Maori presence is obvious on the town’s main street, which is bedecked with the work of master carvers. The beaches nearby are also fantastic, and there are some good accommodation options around.
