Te Aroha is 53km northeast of Hamilton and 50km south of Thames, set at the base of lovely Te Aroha mountain. The Waihou River runs through Te Aroha, eventually emptying into the Firth of Thames.
Te Aroha took off as an Edwardian spa town in the 19th century, its natural hot mineral springs widely sought after for bathing and drinking. “Taking the waters” at one of Te Aroha’s hot pools is still a relaxing and therapeutic activity, especially after doing one of the many walking or biking trails in the surrounding hills
The Mokena Geyser, in the historic Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain, is the world’s only hot soda geyser. Te Aroha is also home to the oldest pipe organ in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1769. It can be found at St Mark’s Anglican Church.
