Until recently, Te Urewera National Park was the largest national park on the North Island, but the national park was disestablished in 2014 and is now simply known as Te Urewera. Although it is no longer a national park, Te Urewera remains open to the public and facilities including the hiking trails are still maintained by the Department of Conservation.
This remote wilderness area is comprised of a large swathe of rugged wilderness and is home to two beautiful lakes – Lake Waikaremoana and the smaller Lake Waikareiti.
Te Urewera has several good walking tracks that range from short walks to Lake Waikareiti to the brilliant Lake Waikaremoana Track.
