Dunedin

Dunedin is a thriving student city with a unique mix of cultural and natural appeal. It is sometimes referred to as the Edinburgh of the South thanks to its rich Scottish heritage and fine Victorian architecture. The 1861 gold rush formed the foundations of the city, but today it is noted mostly for its prominent student population. Despite the steep streets (Baldwin Street is the steepest in the world), it is a largely walkable city with accommodation, sights and restaurants clustered around the central Octagon.

The city has some interesting museums and galleries, as well as some excellent factory tours like the Cadbury Chocolate Factory and Speight’s Brewery. These tours are a great alternative to museums and include some tasty samples. The Otago Peninsula, where you can go to the beach or see rare penguins and albatross thriving in their natural habitat, is an easy day trip from the city.

Local transport

Dunedin has a fairly extensive bus network with most bus routes terminating in and around The Octagon. Most bus fares within the city cost $2.60–3.40, although buses to the nearby Otago Peninsula can cost up to $10.20.
