Otago is one of the most popular regions for backpackers in New Zealand – and rightfully so. Early birds can catch the morning surf and watch penguins head to sea on the coast, or watch the sun rise over Mount Aspiring National Park. Night owls will find plenty of places to party in student city Dunedin or backpackers’ heaven Queenstown. For the adventurous, Queenstown offers some of the world’s best adrenaline-pumping activities. This region has a great tourist infrastructure without (for the most part) feeling too commercial and its residents are fun-loving and welcoming. Getting around is easy, and accommodation options are excellent.
